California AR-15 Laws: How to Build and Own a Legal AR

Yes, you can legally own an AR-15 style rifle in California—but it must be configured to comply with state assault weapon laws. Here's how to do it right.

Understanding California's Assault Weapon Laws

California defines assault weapons by features. A semi-automatic, centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine becomes an assault weapon if it has ANY of these features:

  • Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
  • Thumbhole stock
  • Folding or telescoping stock
  • Grenade/flare launcher
  • Flash suppressor
  • Forward pistol grip

Compliance Option 1: Featureless Build

Remove all prohibited features while keeping a standard detachable magazine:

  • Replace pistol grip with featureless grip (Thordsen, fin grip, etc.)
  • Use fixed stock (no adjustable/folding)
  • Remove flash hider (use muzzle brake or thread protector)
  • No vertical foregrip

Pros: Standard magazine release, quick reloads

Cons: Less comfortable grip, limited stock options

Compliance Option 2: Fixed Magazine

Keep all standard features but use a fixed magazine that requires action disassembly to remove:

  • Mag lock devices (require rear takedown pin pull to release magazine)
  • AR Maglock, Hogue Freedom Fighter, etc.
  • Keeps pistol grip, adjustable stock, flash hider

Pros: Standard ergonomics and features

Cons: Slower reloads, must break action open

Magazine Capacity

Regardless of configuration, magazines are limited to 10 rounds in California.

Building vs. Buying

You can:

  • Buy a complete California-compliant rifle from a dealer
  • Buy a compliant lower receiver and build it yourself
  • Convert an existing rifle to compliance

What's NOT Legal

  • Standard AR-15 configuration (detachable mag + features)
  • .50 BMG rifles
  • Registered assault weapons (grandfathered only)
